Question: My dad is 83, diabetic. He has been going to see a kidney dr because of bad readings on his levels, he also sees a heart dr they have used water pills to relieve swelling. Both Drs have gotten the heart and kidney issues under control. But his iron is sometimes low and as of now his potassium is low. The last couple of months he has had this problem with burping this seems to happen a lot while he is trying to eat. Hard time swallowing even liquids. He doesn't complain about chest pain or heart un just trouble while eating or drinking. I wondered if it could be caused from medication or related to heart or kidney problems but the Drs say no. Please give me a starting point to suggest to drs

Brief Answer:
not likely related to heart or kidney disease

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

As his doctors mentioned, these symptoms are not likely related to the heart or kidney.
Heart disease is usually associated with heart related symptoms (chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, swelling of the legs and abdomen, fatigue) .

Kidney disease causes fatigue, swelling, nausea/vomiting (if some bloods abnormal), numbness, loss of appetite , dry skin.

Neither is normally associated with the symptoms that you mentioned.

It may be related to one of his meds , gastrointestinal side effects can occur with some medications. The side effect profile of each of his meds can be checked.

Excess burping/gas can be due to reflux in some cases, this is the reason that his doctors would have given the anti acid. They can sometimes take a week to come into effect because they cannot get rid of the acid already present only decrease future production (depending on which one he was given)
Some cases of severe reflux can be due to the presence of the h pylori bacteria which can be assessed by blood tests, a scope to take a look , making sure there is no blockage affecting swallowing, may also be needed.

Other causes are: (1) use of gas producing foods- broccoli, cabbage, turnips, beans, brussel sprouts, prunes, apples, carbonated drinks

(2) lactose intolerance or particular intolerance to certain foods (a food diary would help with this)

(3) celiac disease

I hope this helps , feel free to ask any other questions
