Question: My son(2+) is having sore throat since last 2 days.
He is crying intermittently in night.
We took him to emergency doctor yesterday and doctor has put him on antibiotics. The course began yesterday night itself.
I wanted to know by when can we expect the improvement in his condition.

Brief Answer:
It might take 3-4 days

Detailed Answer:
Hi...I understand your concern. I assume that your son has got a bacterial pharyngitis and so was started in antibiotics. usually it might take 3-4 days for the symptoms to get better.
Even now your son might have a viral or a bacterial pharyngitis. If it is simple viral pharyngitis, symptoms should go away gradually over a period of about one week. If it is bacterial or streptococcal sore throat, symptoms should subside within 3-4 days after you begin the antibiotics.

I have few questions for you -
1. How many days of fever was there before these symptoms started?
2. Dis he have painful swallowing and enlarged tonsils?
3. Was any rapid streptococcal antigen test done before starting antibiotics?
4. Was a throat swab for culture and sensitivity done before antibiotics were started?
5. What antibiotic was started and at what strength and dose?

Kindly get back to me with the answers to above questions and I will be glad to help you.
Hope my answer was helpful for you. I am happy to help any time. Further clarifications and consultations on Health care magic are welcome. Wish your kid good health.

Hello Doctor,
Thanks for the response.
Here are the answers to your queries:
1. How many days of fever was there before these symptoms started?
A. 1-2 days (Mild fever only)

2. Dis he have painful swallowing and enlarged tonsils?
A. As he is not accepting food, i believe he is having painful swallowing.
Based on yesterday diagnosis, doctor told that there was follical formation in
throat for which antibiotics are required.

3. Was any rapid streptococcal antigen test done before starting antibiotics?
A. No

4. Was a throat swab for culture and sensitivity done before antibiotics were
started?
A. No. As i showed him to emergency doctor, there was no such recommendation.
However i am planning to have one more appointment today to seek additional
tests required to determine exact rootcause (if its not known by current
diagnosis).

5. What antibiotic was started and at what strength and dose?
A. Azithrol 200mg
Dosage: 3ml per day for 3 days
As he has fluffy nose, doctor also recommended T-minic syrup and Calpol syrup
(Both 2.5ml and 3.5ml for 3 times a day resp for 5 and 2 days resp)

Also, as of today he doesn't have any fever but he is cranky and crying at time for which i was thinking whether treatment is going in right direction.
Pl let me know your opinion.
Thanks once again,
XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
You are in right directoin - don't worry

Detailed Answer:
Hi...You are on right direction. Do not worry. Only thing is that I would recommend doing a rapid test and throat swab culture before starting on antibiotic.
