Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat, Swollen Glands And Persistent Cough

default
Posted on Mon, 12 Jun 2017
Question: I have had a sore throat, swollen glands and a cough for over 2 weeks. I was diagnosed with strep 5/7 and then did not get better. I was on 3 antibiotics: penicillin, augmentin and then cephalexin. The last time I was in to the dr. was last Tues. They ran another strep test...it was negative. They also mentioned it could be mono. I was referred to an ENT, but have not yet been in. Can I get an opinion?

Brief Answer:
viral infection is possible

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

the symptoms you've described usually suggest viral etiology. It was a XXXXXXX to read that a strep-test was positive, although this test does not provide adequate proof of the cause. Having not responded to augmentin is another reason to believe it's not streptococcus. Amoxicillin (like the drug contained in augmentin) may induce a rash in many patients with mononucleosis. Patients with mononucleosis syndrome usually present with enlarged nodes and sometimes with spleen and/or liver enlargement.

In any case with prolonged course of a pharyngitis investigation is required. The first things to exclude are viruses that cause such syndromes like the Epstein-Barr virus, the CMV, the HIV and hepatitis viruses. If none of the above are positive and the symptoms still persist then an ENT specialist should take over.

I hope you find my comments helpful!
Kind Regards!
