Suggest Treatment For Sore And Swollen Throat Along With Dry Cough

default
Posted on Wed, 13 May 2015
Question: Seeking advise for virus versus bacteria
Symptoms are:
Sore, swollen throat, hurts to swallow, hot at times
Body aches all over, no headache to speak of
Body temp hot & cold, mild not feverish
Developing dry cough, not constant

If it's just viral I probably don't need a GP because they won't prescribe anything for virus?
Thanks

Brief Answer:
probably viral

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for your question.
From what you describe this sounds like a viral infection. Sore throats associated with bacteria (usually streptococcus) often have a very painful sore throat, what patches on the back of the throat or tonsils, fever and no cough.
If you develop high fevers, fatigue and worsening cough it could be turning in to pneumonia so in that case you would really want to see a doctor.
With the symptoms you describe above I suggest that you drink lots of water, take some extra vitamin C, get plenty of sleep at night and eat healthy foods.
If it is not resolving in a week or if it is getting worse then see your GP
I hope you are feeling better soon,
Dr. Robinson
