Suggest Treatment For Side Effects Of Terbinafine

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Aug 2016
Question: I have been diagnosed with sub-cutaneous lupus, possibly drug induced by Terbinifine, and have been prescribed Hydroxychloriquine which has had severe side effects of blurred vision with spectrum colouration and significant hair loss. The dermatologist has advised immediate cessation of the drug and, instead has prescribed Mepacrine which I understand is not licensed in the UK. Because of the tremendous problems I have experienced from drugs, I am very apprehensive of taking Mepacrine without knowing the possible side effects. Could you please advise?

Brief Answer:
You can give it a try.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through your query and understand your concerns. Disease modifying agents are used as a treatment modality for subcutaneous lupus and Mepacrine is one such drug. Although not 'licensed' in UK, it is used in UK for the purpose and you can probably give it a try. You can find more information about it at:

The side effects are usually seen especially when taken in high doses. Besides, I do not think that you need to be bothered by side effects as they affect only a minority of the patients taking the medicine. Incidentally most of the medicines available for the treatment of your condition have major side effect profile anyway and it is no use presuming which drug would give side effects in your case. What matters is the risk reward ratio.
