Brief Answer:
Muscular pain likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain between the shoulder blades that you have is likely to be due to a muscular pain- more related to the posture. Sitting in a single posture for long time and improper mattress support can aggravate the problem.

Medications like methylcobalamin and analgesics will reduce pain. If pain is severe a neurotropic like pregabalin can be added, you can take them after consulting your treating doctor.

Some exercises which can be done after pain has reduced include- shoulder rotation, neck rotation, and isometric neck exercises.
You may consult physiotherapist for further guidance. He may start TENS, or ultrasound which is helpful in your case.

Some life style modifications to prevent pain– Take break every 40 min from your work and do some neck rotations, stretches, walk and get back to work. Sit with taking support to your back and neck, and do not watch television constantly.
I will advise you to check your vit B12 and vit D3 levels also.

I hope this answers your query.

I hate to admit, but I did some research online and I am wondering about this pain. I have been a smoker for 35 years and also a drinker. Could it be liver problems, heart problems or lung problems

Brief Answer:
Not due to any serious problem.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The pain that you have is not likely to be related to heart lung or liver problems. Please do not worry. In case the pain is persistent then do get yourself examined by your physician.

Thank you. I appreciate your help. I have heard and seen that shoulderblade pain can be a cause for other concerns. Do you agree? I had a friend who died from lung cancer and I remember she had consistent pain in between the shoulder blades. I do not want to be neurotic; but it seems easiest to speak to a doctor this way than face to face as I find it somewhat humiliating to admit that I am a smoker and drinker to the degree that I am.

Brief Answer:
Muscle pain is the commonest cause.

Detailed Answer:
The pain between the shoulders can be due to many causes with muscular pain being the commonest cause. You can take a mils pain killer and start with daily exercises and few lifestyle modifications that I have suggested. The pain should subside in a week. In case the pain persists then do consider consulting a physician for a direct examination and necessary investigations.
Regards.
