Suggest Treatment For Severe Pain In The Neck

default
Posted on Fri, 14 Oct 2016
Question: Had a painful crick in my neck for over a week now. The pain is in my right side and hurts when i turn my head to the left and extends down from my head through the neck into my right shoulder blade.

Usually i get this for 1 or 2 days but never a week. Strangely for some of the days my right tonsil became sore on the same side, and hurt to swallow. I dont know if that was a cooincidence but my throat is now better but the muscle neck pain remains. Ive been taking ibuprofen and codeine which eases the pain mildly but it is affecting my life and sleep.

My forward head posture is rather bad and im worried this is now a permanent pain

Brief Answer:
A muscular pain likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in your neck is likely to be a muscular pain due to a sprain or a poor posture and not related to the tonsillar infection. Treatment includes
1. Use of cervical collar helps in immobilisation and brings relief.
2. Medical drugs like pain killers - acetaminophen/ibuprofen and muscle relaxants might be helpful.
3. Methylcobalamin supplements are also recommended for nerve compression symptoms.
4. Cervical isometric exercises are beneficial to maintain the strength of the neck muscles. Neck and upper back stretching exercises, as well as light aerobic activities, also are recommended under the guidance of a physical therapist.
5. Hot fomentation helps in relieving acute symptoms.
6. You can avoid using a pillow / watching TV or working on computer.
Avoid prolonged sitting / leaning forward/ 2 wheeler driving for long distances.

A course of Muscle relaxants, interferential therapy (IFT) and/or Intermittent Cervical Traction (ICT) for a week followed by exercises will help you.

I hope this answers your query.
