Information

Detailed Answer:
Hello -

Pain in the lower left side of the back can be from different things. If the pain is just behind and just below your waist, it could be from kidneys.

Kidney pain most often is either from an infection (for which you would also likely feel ill as with fever and nausea), or a stone can cause ongoing pain.

If the pain seems to change more in response to position, it may be musculoskeletal such as from a strained muscle or from arthritis.

If you are unsure, and if the pain is significant, best to go in to be checked to see if it is in the area of the kidney. Also if you are having any urinary symptoms (burning, pain with urination, blood) or fever or nausea. The doctor can do an exam and tell if the pain is in the urinary tract/kidneys, get a urinalysis, and possibly an X-ray to see if a stone can be identified.

Does any of this sound like it might apply to you?
