default
Posted on Mon, 13 Feb 2017
Question: I started having a bad cough This past weekend. By Monday i had a slight fever. Tuesday night my temperature was 102.6 and i rarely have a fever. I have coughed up phlegm which was bloody yesterday and today. I am extremely tired and feel like I am going to pass out when I stand. I had the pneumonia shot two years ago Also, something just popped in my right ear and it hurts and is making a kind of roaring sound
. Any idea what I have and what to do about it?

Brief Answer:
You could be having lower respiratory tract infection like pneumonia.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Bdubbery ,

Thanks for posting your query on HCM.

From your description it seems you could be having lower respiratory tract infection like pneumonia. Are you still running fever and if yes what is the range? Are you a smoker? In view of your symptoms and blood in the phlegm you need to undergo certain tests. To start with get a cbc and chest x-ray done. You will need a course of antibiotics. For these consult your PCP or a pulmonologist who can advise you on all these matters and guide your treatment accordingly.

Take care.

Dr. Dangwal,
Thank you for replying. The fever appeasrs to be gone, and no I am not a smoker. My daddy died of lung cancer, so I have never smoked.I am still having difficulty breathing and am wheezing.i am so extremely weak. i did not think I was going to make it through taking a shower tonight. I felt so weak and my back was hurting very badly. I have an appointment with a nurse practitioner tomorrow. Our insurance changed this year, and my GP is not on their plan. This appointment was set up to get established with this practice (before I got sick). So, I am kind of nervous about seeing someone new.

Brief Answer:
Ask your nurse practitioner to get a CBC and a chest x-ray done.

Detailed Answer:
Ask your nurse practitioner to get a CBC and a chest x-ray done and also ask if she can prescribe an antibiotic also. Augmentin or azithral is a preferred choice.

There can be many causes for blood in sputum commonest being infection which seems to be likely in your case as well and should respond to antibiotics. However there can be other causes also, hence if there is no improvement in your symptoms even after taking antibiotics you will have to consult a physician.

Wishing you the best.
