Suggest Treatment For Severe Chest Cold, Cough, Fever And Sore Throat

default
Posted on Mon, 24 Aug 2015
Question: I had a bad chest cold starting Feb 9, 2014. At my May 22, 2014 annual physical I still had the cough, but Dr. said sometimes it takes months to get rid of. Still had cough at my May 26, 2015 physical; Dr. prescribed Raniydine 150mg for GERT. I took it for a month but no better. On July 13, 2015, I went to urgent care with coughing spells and it was hard to breathe. I had chest x-ray and was prescribed Proventil HFA inhaler, Fluticasone 50mcg nasal spray, and OTC Claritin. My husband caught a cold on July 17, 2015, stuffy head and runny nose, is just getting over. On July 23, 2015 I awoke with a sore throat. I had a lot of coughing spells, wheezing, trouble breathing. By Sunday night, July 26, 2015 I had a fever of 102.5, after it broke I thought I felt better. I now have a runny nose, trouble breathing, and am hoarse. My breathing seems to be progressively worse. I can only sleep sitting up, and wake up often with coughing spells. Do I need to see the Dr. now or wait for another week to see if the cold subsides? August 1, 2015 XXXX

Brief Answer:
Should go to ER if can't see your doctor immediately

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

I have gone through your medical history carefully and am sorry for the situation you are going through.

From what you are describing, it seems that all you have gone through is related to old pneumonia.

As you've caught cold recently, and no better until now, and you're constrained to sleep at sitting position, I highly recommend to go to ER as you need immediate evaluation and treatment.

Unless you can schedule an immediate appointment with your doctor.

Although you've got treatment, you're still having breathing problems, that's why you need immediate medical attention. To my opinion, you need to take prescription antibiotics too along with symptomatic medications as you've been prescribed.

GERD is often associated with aspirative pneumonia due to aspiration of gastric fluid into the airways.

Hope it was of help!
