Question: My name is XXXXXXX 12 years ago I lost my Mom and Mother-in-law within 2 weeks apart. I am serverely hearing impaired. I had a mental breakdown and started hearing voices. At first I heard and saw many voices. Now I mostly only hear one when I take my hearing aids off. He is getting mean. I hear music, too. For some reason I smell cigarette smoke. I have taken many meds but not one has stopped the voice. Two years ago I was on so many older drugs that I came down with drug related Parkinson disease. I couldn't hardly do anything for myself. I cried and slept most of the time. The Drs said I might not fully recover. I'm happy to say I am recovering more and more everyday.
I have search and read all I can to find help. I really would like your help in finding a better treatment for this.
Sincerely , XXXXXXX

I take Quetiapine (Seroquel) 100mg at night
Lamotrigine (Lamictal) 200mg at night
Clonazepam(klonopin) 0.5 mg at night

It has already been ruled out that I have schizophrenia by 3 Drs.
I function to well. The voices don't tell me to harm someone or kill myself.
They say I'm Bi Polar, but not really sure about that either.
It has been in the last week that the voice has been yelling and I have no idea what he is saying. He is not yelling now and I'm back to coping.
They only come thru when I don't have my hearing aids on.
I am panicking because my hearings is going fast. Soon their will not be a hearing aid strong enough for me. I do have a option of getting a Cochlear Implant. I have to be really sure that want make the sounds and voices worst. They are also very expensive.
I hope I have explained everything you need.
Oh, I need to tell you that 2 years ago I was taking a lot of older drugs and I came down with drug induce Parkinson's Disease. For two years I couldn't function hardly at all. The brain Dr said I might not recover completely from it.
I'm removing really well from that, but some of my memory is gone or just hasn't come back.
Like I said in my question I am searching high and low for answers and help.
Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
You can take donepezil

Detailed Answer:
HI

You do not have hallucination with hearing aids, that means it is related to hearing impairment. Last time, you have mentioned in voices you hear music as well as multiple other voice. You also smell cigarette smoke. All these symptoms would go in favor of underline organic psychosis, that's means it is not a schizophrenia.

I would keep possibility of Musical ear syndrome (MES), which is a condition seen in people who have hearing loss and subsequently develop auditory hallucinations. "MES" has also been associated with musical hallucinations, which is a complex form of auditory hallucinations where an individual may experience music or sounds that are heard without an external source.

The most accepted physiopathology of musical hallucination associated to hearing loss (caused by cochlear lesion, cochlear nerve lesion or by interruption of mesencephalon or pontine auditory information) is the disinhibition of auditory memory circuits due to sensory deprivation. The effect of hearing aids on the improvement of musical hallucination as a result of the hearing loss improvement is well documented. It happens because auditory hallucination may be influenced by the external acoustical environment. Neuroleptics, antidepressants and anticonvulsants have been used in the treatment of musical hallucination. Cases of improvement with the administration of carbamazepine, meclobemide and donepezil are reported.

You have been taking quetiapine (antipsychotic) and lamotrigine (anticonvulsant) and getting response. I would suggest you to add donepezil in treatment, that would help in controlling hallucination and memory loss.

In case, you need further help, you can ask.
