Question: My toe next to my big toe on my right foot has become red and swollen with pain. started about 4 days ago. confined just to that toe. soaking tends to relieve it for awhile, but still looks the same, red, swollen and pain comes back after I stand or walk for awhile. I am 77 years old and in good health, blood pressure is normal and no indication of any other conditions in my annual physical. My height is 5'7" and I weigh 163lbs.

Brief Answer:
Need to rule out Gout and avascular necrosis

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Thanks for the query.

It's possible that you could have an arthritic toe. Could be due to Gout or avascular necrosis.

I would suggest you get an Xray of the foot and we can continue from there.

Continue icing the toe. Wear soft soled footwear. Keep the foot elevated.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Regards,

Dr. Aashish Raghu
