Question: Diagnosed with a UTI and yeast infection. On oral meds for both since Thursday. Labia still very red itchy and swollen. Vigorously rubbed a washcloth on my labia and the wash cloth is bloody. Have been soaking in apple cider vinegar bath. Help!' When can I expect some relief? And what can I do for the redness and itching?

Brief Answer:
Povidone Iodine locally , Cetirizine orally

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
History noted.
The combined UTI and yest infection will cause unbearable itching and due to rubbing has abraded the skin and gave way to further secondary infection.

I would advise you to clean the area with plain water, tap dry with a clean cotton cloth or hair dryer. Apply liquid Povidone Iodine 5 % locally to make the area sterile. Repeat this 2 to 4 times a day, take rest and if possible expose the area to air in bedroom. If itching is more you can certainly apply lignocaine jelly locally to stop itching. This will help immediately.

Continue the medicines already prescribed, add an antihistamine like cetirizine to reduce the itching and an anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen to reduce the edema / swelling. Add Probiotics. You can request your Doctor to give a sleeping pill to have a sound sleep so that the inadvertent itching/ rubbing during sleep is avoided. The less you touch the area , earlier will be recovery. Your partner should take the similar treatment if your are sexually active.

I hope the measures given above will certainly help you a lot.
You may also ask for the blood test particularly for diabetes, Urine-routine, microscopy , culture and sensitivity if not already done and an ultrasonography of the abdomen particularly for genito-urinary system.

Wishing you an early recovery.
