Question: Hello!
My husband who is 30 years old was suffering from constant fever (102-103 degree celsius) a week ago. But then doctor gave him a mild antibiotic Droxyl Clav and paracetamol for five days and the fever started to decline. However weakness remained. He thought that he was all good until from yesterday he started feeling weak and stressed out all again with mild body temperature of 100 degree celsius. He started getting back to work on the 10th day when he was feeling better last week. Do you think stress or work can cause fever to relapse again? We consulted our doctor again yesterday and he asked to take some mild medicines : 1. a Food supplement to curb weakness and 2. a mild medicine Glycomate to deal with his blood sugar which was 133 (Fasting) and 180 (PP). We also underwent all tests like Typhoid, Dengue but all was negetive. In his Urine test only one thing was marked red by the doctor : Ketones: NIL.

We are really confused as to what is happening as our doctor could not tell us what caused the fever. Can you help us?

Brief Answer:
Viral fever?? weakness could be due to low sugar

Detailed Answer:
Hi Ms. XXXXXX,

Thanks for choosing health care magic.

I have gone through your query and I understand your worry regarding your husband not recovering completely from his illness even after therapy.

I am suspecting viral fever which is usually self limiting and patient recovers within 10 days completely and such viral fevers are usually associated with body pain and generalized weakness. This weakness also reduces within 15 days.

Antibiotics are prescribed in viral fevers to avoid secondary infection by bacteria as there is fall in the immune system whenever there is a viral infection.

I am glad that your husband's reports show that he is negative for typhoid and dengue.

But his sugar levels are indicating diabetic sugar levels and hence his treating doctor has prescribed an oral antidiabetic drug.(Glycomet)

If ketones are not present in urine it is normal, so no need of concern in that aspect.

I am suspecting weakness caused by Glycomet in this case. As your husband is only 30 years old, most unlikely to develop diabetes in such young age. I suggest you reconfirm his sugar levels and find out if oral antidiabetic is really necessary.
I suggest you monitor your husband's sugar levels regularly to rule out hypoglycemia.

You can continue the food supplement prescribed.

Replenish his energy levels by giving him fresh fruit juices, vegetable soups and salads.

I hope I have helped you with this answer.

Please get back if any more clarifications.

Thanks.
