Suggest Treatment For Persistent High Fever In A Child
Question: Good morning Doctor!!
My question is related to my 2.5 years old boy Shubhransh. He was fine yesterday morning but after returning from his playschool in the afternoon we felt that he had fever.
Good part was he was not crying and also did not feel him irritated. Given Crocin which was prescribed to him in March when he had got his vaccination. Pattern was ~101F in the evening and today it was ~100F in the morning.
He looks pretty okay but his temperature is a concern. Can you please suggest next course of action? Should we wait for another couple of days before scheduling an appointment with doctor. If Crocin is not okay then please suggest another over the counter medicine for the same.

Children often suffer from viral infections that may manifest with fever. Since your child is otherwise active and playful, I would not be concerned. All you have to do is to continue to give Crocin (paracetamol) when he has temperature more than 100°F. Also give tepid sponging. If he has cough or nasal discharge give him some antiallergic like cetirizine once daily for next few days. The fever may last for 5 days or so irrespective of treatment. It is only if your child looks ill or lethargic that you have to take him to a doctor at the earliest.
For a day or two after vaccination (mainly with DPT or DT) a child may have fever and that is not something concerning. Crocin and tepid sponging is all that is needed.
