Brief Answer:
It could be fungal infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome to the HCM.

Dear first I would like to ask, if these patches are circular, and scaly or just patchy with local hair loss? Did it start after some medicine use?

If these patches on scalp are itchy, scaly with red bald spots with brittle hair then most likely it could be ring worm (fungal infection). It can be diagnosed by visual exam by dermatologist using wood's lamp and to confirm it a scraping from a scaly patch of scalp is taken and examined under microscope.

After confirming it can be treated with oral medications like griseofulvin and terbinafine hydrochloride and with anti fungal shampoo having ketoconazole or selenium sulfide for at least 6 weeks. Avoid unnecessary antibiotic use as it may aggravate the condition. Drink cleaner water.

Hopefully my answer will be helpfull and please let me know if you have more questions to ask.
Regards,
Dr.Maheshwari

They are not circular, and there is no hair loss. Just silvery flakes. They are along the front of my hairline, and I have just noticed them going up my center part. The skin is sometimes red underneath them, and they are itchy. Not consistent with ringworm symptoms .

Brief Answer:
Get scraping test done.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Dear what your symptoms you have mentioned can occur either in parasitical infection or autoimmune skin condition. But to conclude any you need to do scraping ( scalp hair or skin sample) test first so it can be treated accordingly.
