Posted on Tue, 12 Sep 2017
Question: I have been experiencing really dry scalp. I can tell it isn't dandruff because it is not oily, it is dry and flaking. I would just like to know if there is a really strong scalp moisturizer anyone on this group would recommend. I am using a regular moisturizer after washing my hair, but it does not do the job.

Brief Answer:
Several shampoos that might help are mentioned and advises.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking at healthcaremagic.

I carefully read your question and understand your concern. It is difficult to have to deal with dry scalp and scales that might be on your hair or clothes daily. It is generally a long term condition and needs to try different treatments till you find the one that helps you.

Generally dandruff is not oily most of the times. So the dry hair if you have scales it is dandruff even if the hair is not oily.
The treatment for dry scalp is by using the appropriate shampoo and regular showering. Moisturizer after washing will not give you a good enough effect.

Some recommendations for the dry scalp, especially if you have scales with it is:
1. for mild cases just daily washing with mild shampoo is enough in most patients
2. For more severe cases than specific shampoos will need to be used, the anti-dandruff being the ones to look for. Not all antidandruff shampoos are the same queality and help every one the same way so trying the following options and finding the one is effective for you is recommended.
- tar based shampoo
- selenium sulfide shampoo
- ketoconazol shampoo
- shampoos with salycilic acid
- pirythione zinc shampoos

All the above shampoos can help with the dry scalp and scales and you need to seek if you can access them and try them daily for at least 2 weeks before you know it is not working. If you have scalp itchiness or irritation with the shampoo you should stop using it.
If you are having a good effect than after 2 weeks cut back gradually to 2-3 times a week. You might also try to alternate 2 shampoos (one day use one shampoo and the next day the other one).

Tea tree moisturizer you are using is an alternative medicine used for centuries to help with this problem also and many patients have good effect with it. If it is not helping in your case than you might need to try the other options mentioned above, or choose to combine one of the above shampoo options with the tea tree moisturizer.

Final comment: you will need to be patient and try the shampoos one by one till you find the one that helps you.

I hope this is helpful and answers to your question but please feel free to contact me in case anymore clarification is needed on this.

Kind regards,
