Suggest Treatment For Painful Sore Throat And Shingles Infection

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Dec 2016
Question: I've had shingles for about 2 weeks. Two days ago I lost my voice. The two mornings since, I have woken up with a painful sore throat, but it has gone away within an hour or two of waking up. A tickle in my throat remains most of the time. Today I started having a cough that seems to come from my lungs, very painful. Symptom checker suggested it was viral something that would get better in a few days with rest, but then the cough started and opened up more possibilities. Normally I don't take a lot of medicine and just let things run it's course, but I have a trip to Disneyland in about a week and need to know if this will in fact get better in a couple of days on its own or if I should start taking something for it.

Brief Answer:
Viral pharyngitis/LPR

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I am Dr.Barani and I am pleased to assist you.

There are two possibilities.
1. Pharyngitis probably viral. This is usually self limiting and will subside in on its own in 3-5 days. Drink enough fluids. Do salt water gargling.Take tylenol for relief.

2. Since the symptom went away within an hour or two of waking up and there is a tickle in your throat which is probably globus, laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) is a possibility. Taking omeprazole will provide relief in this case.
