Suggest Treatment For Painful Shin Splints

Question: Please can you give some advice regarding discomfort I have had in my shin today. I am a middle-long distance runner. On my run this morning I was experiencing a strange deep pain in the front of my shin, near to my ankle. A weird type of pain that is difficult to describe. It was uncomfortable but I could run still. It improved as I ran and by the end I could feel nothing.
When I got home I noticed a small bruise in the area and there is a lump which hurts if I press on it gently. I can't remember banging my shin in the past couple of days at all. I havent changed my shoes, training type or training volume either.
Please can you advise whether this appears to be something i should be concerned by?

Brief Answer:
shin splints?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

it sounds like shin splints. This is usually caused by a change in the training routine (by adding some extra load usually). It causes pain on the inner lower part of the shin and perhaps a little bruising. At first it may get better as your train and get worse when the extremity cools off. Later (if left untreated) the pain may become more persistent and severe even when exercising.

Rest, ice applications and stretching exercises are the mainstay of treatment measures. It needs some time to get better though (a few weeks usually).

You should visit and orthopedics specialist for assessment and diagnosis.
