Suggest Treatment For Pain, Itching And Swelling In Outer Ears

Posted on Fri, 21 Aug 2015
Question: About 9 months ago I started experiencing pain, itching and swelling in both of my outer ears. There was sticky drainage from both ears and the openings were almost swollen shut. I also had both eyes red and swollen at the same time. The first dr. I went to said I had pinkeye and outer ear infection. I was prescribed ciprofloxacin and Vigamox. After a few days of treatment I was not much better. I got a different dr. the second time and was told I had allergies. I was given 40mg. prednisone for 1 week. I finished all the meds on a Friday and everything was fairly cleared up. By Monday it was starting again. I saw an ENT Thursday and he did a head ct scan that didn't really show anything. Prescribed more eye drops, ear drops, Bactrim and Prednisone for 2 weeks. I saw an eye dr. in the midst of this treatment and he thought it was allergies and prescribed steroid eye drops. Everything cleared up. I followed up with the ENT and we thought whatever it was had gone away. Since then my ears are very dry and itch a lot. The outer parts swell a little and hurt to the touch. I now have a rash on my eyelids and down around the outer edge. I've tried several lotions, Vasoline, olive oil, mineral oil, hydrocortisone creams, Benadryl cream, Claritin and Flonase. Nothing makes it any better and I don't even know what kind of dr. to go to next. I don't have any trouble breathing and don't sneeze or cough a lot. I've never experienced allergies before and haven't made any lifestyle changes. Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
It seems to be due to a fungal infection.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have very thoroughly gone through the details provided. Prolonged use of antibiotics and steroid predisponses to fungal infection and I think that is the reason for the itchiness that you have. Restrain from use of steroids including hydrocortisone. Even if they make it go away, they would make it return even faster. I would suggest you to apply candid (clotrimazole) powder or lotion topically over the affected areas. If that does not help, one or two doses of Diflucan (fluconazole) 150 mg tablet taken once in a week should help.
As of now, since your local doctors have not been able to resolve your problems, I would insist you not to go to any more doctors right now. Try my suggestions and see if you get relief.
