Question: Hi I'm a 64yr female with two lumberectomies, 4-5lumbar 2003 and 2004, I have been travling cross country in our RV and have been experiecning buttock pain in left hip. Went on line and I think it maybe piriformis syndrome. I thought the pain was from sitting on ball park benches this summer as it went away. Now I'm to the point where my left leg is weak, can not put weight on it going up and down stairs there is pn down the leg front and back sometimes. I sleep fine but sitting or walking(2-4miles a day) I have lots of hip pn, bot I do back stretches in the AM and sometimes in the PM take tylenol arthiritis.

Brief Answer:
See a doctor of physical medicine. Physiotherapy should help.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. Your pain and problems are due to neurogenic cause (due to nerve compression). You need a through clinical evaluation. Hot compress will provide some relief. I would insist you to see a physical therapist. He/she would be able to administer the right exercises that should be of help to you. He/she could also administer ultrasonotherapy which usually helps.

Since I am traveling. Would continuing walking, small periods of time, heat an ice along with stretching help this resolve itself? I will be in Myrtle Beach SC for a short period of time and thought to seek out a massage therapist.
I think to see a physical therapist would involve finding a PCP, who would need to refer me to PT which would take several weeks to do normally ,with traveling longer. I know this is needs to be taken seriously but can I do this on my own?
On your web site I thought at one point I came a upon some exercises for this problem. Some of them I do already for my back/core muscles.

I'm hoping to be able to treat my self till I get home in Dec without doing any nerve damage.

Brief Answer:
You can do the exercises on your own. You need to learn the techniques.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. I understand your present situation. You can google up for the right exercises and can do them on your own. Youtube videos will help. Although this would not be equivalent to a personalized guidance that a PT can provide, you can do what is most convenient for you. Nevertheless, I would still insist you to see a PCP and PT.

I would recommend hot compress. This is different from ice compress.
