Suggest Treatment For Pain In Ribs And Cough While Treating A Sinus Infection

default
Posted on Fri, 29 Jan 2016
Question: For the past month or so I've been dealing with a possible sinus infection. I went to an urgent care and received amoxicillin. She said I had a slight ear infection. The RX was for 10 days to pills a day. I only have 1 day remaining of the antibiotic. My symtoms were/are as follows:
Coughing producing Phlegm (Dark Yellow to light yellow in color)
Sinus Pressure (Front and Back of head and Ears)

I had been coughing very hard for a few weeks. Now I've noticed a pain when trying to sleep on my right side. It feels like My ribs may be bruised. If I push on my lower right rib a pain radiates from there to my lower back rib cage. The harder I push the worse.
I don't notice the pain very often doing normal activities. Only when sleeping and pushing slightly on the area. I have stopped coughing as much. Only really in the morning and a small amount at night. My sinus feel a little better. So I'm wondering if I need to see the doctor about my right rib cage tenderness.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
No need for additional treatment

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I am sorry to hear that you have had a sinus infection with coughing. The cough seems to have irritated your ribs and you have had right sided rib pain. This is very common after a bout of significant coughing and is usually due to a strained intercostal muscle. The treatment is rest and pain control. Even for a fractured rib which I doubt we would only treat the symptoms and your symptoms are already improving.

The sinus pressure also seems to be improving and with additional time the pressure and pain will resolve. I may recommend using a nasal spray like afrin to help reduce congestion and help reduce the pressure but use it only for 3 days XXXXXXX

So in summary
1. rib pain possible strained muscle no additional treatment required
2. Sinus pressure try afrin
3. All will resolve with time 1-2 more weeks

I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you have any additional questions

Thank you for the answer. My main concern was that the rib does not hurt during coughing, sneezing, or bending over. Only while lying down on the right side and pressing on my right lower rib cage. They fact that the pain when I press the front moves to the back also bothered me. So I should not be concerned with Internal organs such as the liver or gall bladder?
