What Causes Pain In Ribs And Chest While Coughing?

I am still getting over a cold during which I had a pretty hard cough. Now I feel a pain about midway down my ribs on the left side of my chest when I cough or move in certain ways. I am a smoker, but have cut back quite a bit once the pain started. I am also a 24 year old male who is athletic and exercises regularly. From the research I have done online, it sounds like I have strained intercostal muscle. Is this probably the case?
