Suggest Treatment For Pain And Burning Sensation In Abdomen

Posted on Mon, 5 Oct 2015
Question: I recently finished treatment for h pylori on Sunday August 30th. I take metoprolol 50 bid, Zoloft 50 bid, Xanax .5 tid prn, hctz 25 prn and synthroid .125 daily. I also take Prilosec and Carafate and a stool softener. I have anxiety and it always starts in my stomach. It feels like a little volcano that spews in my stomach and then I burn in my gut and all over. I have in the past couple of weeks been taking iron with vitamin c 65mg =325mg and some flinstones with iron. I did take some extra b12 in the past few weeks along with vitamin d. I went yesterday to my dr and they ran an anemia panel and I called for results and they were jerks and said he had dictated it and they couldn't get my results. I work for the same facility and knew they could and I informed them of that, they called me back and didn't give me the full panel. Said my folate was low and my b12 was 1280 and platelets were 271 and h/h was 10.7 and 35.0. Well they didn't explain anything to me but told me to take folate if "I wanted to." I am just wandering why my b12 was so hi when July 22 it was 501. I have had a ct of abdomen and pelvis with contrast and it was ok. pelvic us ok, cxr and ekg ok. should I be worried? Should I just go with it and lay off the vitamins but the iron and folate?

this b12 level was not fasting either. It was at 4 pm in the afternoon.

Brief Answer:
No worries, Just folate supplementation and continue rest of the treatment

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Folate levels if low should be corrected. B 12 levels if low are problematic and slight raised levels like yours of 1280 is acceptable if there is no other hematological or metabolic disorder or liver disease which you don't have. Result slight high can be due to the random taking as we recommend a 6 to 8 hours gap between after before doing it. also the medication you take can cause higher B12 levels results. All your work up and blood reports and CT etc are normal and that rules out any serious pathology. Not to worry about. You just need folate supplements.

Foods like green leafy vegetables , beans, lentils, spinach, asparagus, lettuce, avocado, broccoli, oranges and white bread etc are rich sources of folate and should be prefered in diet.

Nut shell all your work up is normal. take folate supplements, don't discard other vitamin supplements. Use them in recommended dosages allowance for a day. Rest continue your medications you have been using. Nothing is worrisome here .

I hope it helps. take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

also I have lost like 18 pounds since may not trying to and I have a lap band. I haven't had a fill in 2 years and I have a large ventral hernia and I had a hiatal hernia that was repaired in 2010. I sometimes feel like I have a large lump in my throat and I don't understand the losing weight. I don't eat as much because I really don't have an appetite and and when I do it's hard to get down. I don't think I have any pathological problems according to labs and xrays. My lap band dr. wouldn't fill me because of the problems. I went to him on Tuesday of last week and I am to call this Tuesday if not better. Just keep a burning in my upper chest now in espophagus and stomach. Should I continue what I am doing still ? Should I call him and let him know so he can arrange a gastro consult.

Brief Answer:
Lap band causes these symptoms. need management

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back to me

Losing weight is attributed to lap band surgery . If you did not needed losing weight why did you opt for lap banding. Pace of losing weight can be adjusted though by adjusting the fill of the band. Talk to your gastroenterologist and let them have a look at filling status of the band and decide what is best for you.

Something stuck in throat feeling and chest pain with burning sensation is a sequelae of this surgery as well and is due to GAstroEsophageal Reflux Disorder. You will need more than prilosec. Eat small frequent meals, minimal spices, stimulants and sweets like chocolate etc.

Good to hear that pelvic ultrasound is normal.

I hope it helps.

I did need lap band. I just haven't had fill in 2 years and didn't lose weight until started losing in May. I've went from 235 to 216. 3 of that this week. So I guess need to just follow up with bariatric dr and let him refer me. I just google and every thing points to gi cancer. I am an RN with very high anxiety. So you think I need more and to see lap dr.

Brief Answer:
Not Malignancy at all

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back to me
of all i would expect the least from a well educated medically informed personnel like registered nurse to be that anxious for a slight decline in weight with ban in place and jumping to conclusions of GI malignancy.

I must say anxiety is kicking in the worries you should not have. It s very unlikely to have cancer and malignancy does not show this way only . That has sequelaes and systemic manifestations like lymphadenopathy , hemetemesis, melena , dysphagia etc.

Its not malignancy. its just the overfunctioned band not filled and adjusted for last two years. Just get an assessment and let them take care of it.

I hope it helps.

I did need lap band. I just haven't had fill in 2 years and didn't lose weight until started losing in May. I've went from 235 to 216. I started at 280 when I got it in 2010 November. I googled and everything points to cancer. I am an RN And have high anxiety and worry. I was just wandering because I had a hiatal hernia fixed when I got the lap band and in my lower sternum epigastric area it hurts on the left side a little and feels like a lump. My back still hurts so I didn't know if maybe from coughing or something I could have brought my hernia back out and along with the hpylori and reflux this may be causing me problems as well?

No worries

As i mentioned earlier it could be all possibilities but cancer is not one of them. But there is no harm in getting it out of the differentials list. Endoscopy will fix that. As far as losing weight is concerned that is due to the lap band and not the malignancy. Hernia recurrence can be ruled out by a simple examination and an ultrasound to rule out any hernia. Epigastric pain, back pain and all other abdominal discomforts are attributed to the lap band and are common sequelae also anxiety is working like petrol to increase the heat of this fire of worries which is not necessary at all.

Just calm down, relax and wait for your Gastro appointment and let them take care of it.

I hope it helps.
