Question: My mother has MDS associated with isolated del(5q). People with this subtype have anemia and fewer than 5% blasts, and genetic material is missing from chromosome 5. I care for her as well as my autistic 7 year old daughter. Could you recommend any dietary or other steps I could take to help her fight the MDS?

Brief Answer:
Lenalidomide is the treatment of choice.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear
I have gone through your question. I can understand your concern.
Your mother has isolated 5q deletion type of MDS.
Main abnormalities are severe anemia and thrombocytosis.

Lenalidomide is the treatment of choice. It has very good results in 5q deletion MDS. It causes reversal of anemia. It cause frequent complete pathological and cytogenetic response.

RBCs transfusion should be given as and when required.

Monitoring of blood count is required while taking lenalidomide.

It has very good prognosis with long survival rate.

So don't worry much about that. Just consult your doctor and start lenalidomide treatment accordingly.

Hope I have answered your question, if you have doubt then I will be happy to answer. Thanks for using health care magic. Wish you a very good health.

Yes sir, she is receiving arinesp shots at present, every 3 weeks, and if that does not work they will begin the lenalidomide.

What I am wanting to know though is what sort of foods can I prepare for her to best support recovery. Thank you.
