What Could Be The Survival Rate Of Patient Suffering With Pneumonia And Pleurisy?

A very close friend of my daughter and I was admitted to hospital with pneumonia and pleurisy and placed in an induced coma on the 26th of December. Upon arrival at the hospital he was given 24 hours to live.

That is now nearly two weeks ago. He made an improvement yesterday, then his liver failed. They again have stabilised him.

We have been told that he is still here due to his peak physical condition and the fact his is 18.... his birthday is due shortly :-(

Are in bits over this, and are wondering if you have any ideas on his survival rate, duration and prognosis.

Any help appreciated - thank you.

Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
Your daughter 's friend is having MODS (Multiple organ dysfunction).
It is common after severe, life threatening pneumonia.
Honestly speaking, survival rate in such patients is very low.
With optimal ICU treatment and Care, only 5-10%patients are treated.
So prognosis is very bad. Duration of treatment can be upto 1-2 months. Such patients even need tracheostomy and ventilator at home also.
So prognosis and survival rate are very poor in his case.
Hope I have solved your query.
Wishing good health to your daughter's friend.
Thanks.
