default
Posted on Mon, 8 Sep 2014
Question: Hi - I have been having muscle cramps in my left calf. I have always had this problem from time to time but lately it seems I have it everyday....especially at night and when I wake up in the morning. Its not also in the calf area but the muscles in my upper left leg will start to act like they want to cramp also. I will get the feeling that my leg is about to cramp when I go up stairs or sit a certain way. Also my legs feel heavy when I am trying to walk.

Brief Answer:
Get investigations done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your query.

You probably have night cramps. It probably occurs due to the vigorous use of muscles and muscle fatigue. Also low blood levels of either calcium or magnesium directly increase the excitability of both the nerve endings and the muscles they stimulate and cause cramps. Muscle cramps can also occur as a side effect of some drugs.

So get your serum calcium, potassium and magnesium levels done and send me the report. You have also mentioned that your legs feel heavy when you try ot walk, for this get xray of lumbosacral spine in AP and Lateral view and send me the report.

Till then take balanced diet including a lot of liquids, attention to safety when exercising, and attention to ergonomic factors.

Eat more foods high in vitamins and magnesium and calcium.

Stretch properly before exercise. Avoid pushing and pulling of heavy objects.

Taking vitamin B complex supplements is suggested by some to help manage leg cramps.

I hope it helps.

Thanks.

Dr.Singh.
