Suggest Treatment For Lump On Shin At The Site Of Injury

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Sep 2015
Question: Hi, About 6 weeks ago I took a stud to the shin in a game of soccer just above my shin guard. This left me with a puncture like cut on my shin and a bruise. The cut has just about fully cleared up now but i have a lump on my shin in the area of impact.
The lump seems to be on the bone, it is hard and does not move. It is not painful unless bumped. Any ideas?

Brief Answer:
Do not worry. It is common to occur after such an injury

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through the description and have checked the attached image. It is very common to have a bony swelling on the shin at the site of the injury and it may take long to become normal completely. It is formed due to the healing process. I do not think that you need to worry about that. If in confusion, you can get a X Ray of your leg - AP and lateral done. The swelling should show up on the X Ray. But unless there is something concerning, you need not worry.

What would have caused such swelling, could there have been a small fracture or something?

Brief Answer:
It can occur during healing

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

During the injury the periosteum or the covering of the bone might be slightly elevated and while healing, cartilage, fibrous material or even bony material gets deposited there and causes the elevation. The possibility of a hairline fracture cannot be ruled out and an X ray can make it clear.

Thank you very much for the explanation. Given that there is no pain i think I will put my mind at rest, should I get any discomfort or irregular changes I will get an x-ray for further assessment.

Thank you once again for your assistance.
