Suggest Treatment For Lower Back Pain

Posted on Tue, 11 Apr 2017
Question: I have been having lower back pain since Feb 27th. After a consultation on March-3rd with an ortho, I was prescribed a muscle relaxant and Vit-D + calcium test. My Vit-D was low, so I was prescribed a supplement. Post that, I was improving. I resumed my gym physical workouts on 5th March. On March-13th while at the gym I encountered severe lower back pain. I re-consulted the ortho on March-14th. After an MRI, I have been diagnosed with a slip disc. I have attached all the consultation notes, blood work and MRI scans/report. I seek a second opinion and advice.

Brief Answer:
My opinion

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX

I have read your query and understood your problem. I have also looked at all your reports and consultation slips.

Your Vitamin D is borderline and requires the therapy as mentioned. You can continue.

Your slip disc is mild and still not yet compressing your nerves.

Avoid bending forwards or lifting weights. Apply hot packs to the affected region. Continue muscle relaxants. Perform physiotherapy back strengthening exercises. Abdominal muscle strengthening exercises will also help. Trial OF TENS therapy will help.

Surgery not required yet. Just posture control and physiotherapy.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Brief Answer:
Needs BMD test

Detailed Answer:
Once Your Vitamin D and Calcium levels are normal, do get a BMD or Bone Mineral Density test. If that is within normal limits, then you can do weights.

Thanks. In my MRI report point (9) states "Disc osteophyte complex noted at C5-C6 level causing compression of traversing nerve roots at left lateral recess". Is there anything related to the neck that I should be aware of?

Brief Answer:
Slip disc

There is a slip disc that is causing compression of the nerves to the arm. If you have tingling, numbness or weakness of the upper limbs then it is significant.

Physiotherapy can proper ergonomic precautions and posture training will help you.
