Suggest Treatment For Lower Back Pain That Radiates To The Navel Area

default
Posted on Tue, 8 Nov 2016
Question: Hello, my name is XXXXXXX Leymeister and I started having pain in lower left side of my back that would radiate around to my front radiating my belly button.
The pain is manageable by taking 2 Tylenol every four hours and using a heating pad. I have had 3 different cancers over 10 years; Uterine, kidney and papillary thyroid cancer. My concern is that I may have cancer in my left kidney or I may have pancreatic cancer. My mother and grandmother were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer when they were 60.

Brief Answer:
Need to investigate fully

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

You have mentioned about three cancers but not furnished any details, like stage, when diagnosed, and treatment received. That would have helped us in suggesting further course of action.

In any case, this type of pain does not necessarily mean cancer. It can also happen in ureteric stones, bone and joint problems, pancreatitis as well as infections. But we should definitely rule out recurrence of cancer, based upon your previous history.

So I would recommend an ultrasound of abdomen and blood/urine analysis at the least to give some idea regarding future plan.

Till then, tylenol and heating pad is ok.

Hope this helps. I will be available for further followup.
Regards

Brief Answer:
unlikely to be recurrence of cancer

Detailed Answer:
None of your past cancers has got high chance of recurrence. So very unlikely that one of them has recurred. But yes, new cancer has to be ruled out by appropriate scanning.

Thank you Sir, I met with my primary physician yesterday. Blood was drawn, urinalysis, a CT Scan, and appointments with an endocrinologist (mother and grandmother died from pancreatic cancer) and a new oncologist.

I have one question, what are the benefits of CT Scan vs an Ultrasound?

Brief Answer:
CT scan more detailed

Detailed Answer:
I think you are on the right track.

CT gives much more detailed picture and more accurate than ultrasound. So getting a CT is always better.
