Suggest Treatment For Light-yellow Splotches On Chest

Posted on Mon, 7 Dec 2015
Question: I am a white male aged 73. I recently discovered a series of light yellow splotches on my chest running upward on my abdomen, right to left, ending with what looks like a bruise under my left breast. No pain. Yellowish stools but clear urine. So, what do you think? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
For this, best to have exam and live function tests.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome,

It is hard to know what is happening without examining you, but given that you have yellow skin discoloration and yellowish stools, I would suggest going in to your doctor for an exam, and then lab work.

In the exam, your doctor will look at the whites of your eyes for discoloration, and feel over your abdomen (and possibly percuss) for the size and shape of your abdominal organs, in particular your liver.

Then the doctor will likely order a few blood tests, including a complete blood count (CBC) and liver function tests (AST, ALT, Bilirubin).

When the liver or gall bladder are having problems, sometimes there can be yellowish pigment that gets in the skin, and the stools can stop having their characteristic brown color (usually appear more of a clay color). Also, bruising may be increased.

So I would recommend you make an appointment for an exam and tests. If you can't get in to be seen by your own doctor in the next week, then go to an urgent care. It is not an emergency but is best to have it evaluated in the next week.
