Question: I am 40 yrs old and for the last few months have had bad knee pain. When I get up on sit down, I have pain on the upper left just behind the kneecap. I have had cortisone injections before and it worked for a few weeks, now the pain is back with a vengeance.

Brief Answer:
Can be patellofemoral syndrome.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
From description it seems your knee pain might be due to chondromalacia patella(patellofemoral pain).Chondromalacia patella is weakening and softening of the cartilage on the underside of the kneecap (patella).
Chondromalacia patella is one of the most common causes of knee pain, especially in women.
Treatment of patellofemoral pain often begins with simple measures. Rest your knee as much as possible. Avoid any activities that increase the pain, such as climbing stairs. Specific exercises can strengthen the muscles that support your knees and control limb alignment, such as your quadriceps, hamstrings and the muscles around your hips.
You can use an elastic knee brace for relief. You need to restrict running for few weeks and concentrate on knee strengthening exercises under the guidance of a physiotherapist.
Try cushioning the blows the knees take by
1. Maintaining the weight near ideal
2. Wearing shock absorbent walking shoes or tennis shoes and wearing cushioned shoes even around the house
3. Taking a Glucosomine/chondroitin supplement.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
