Suggest Treatment For Irritation In Lungs And Dry Cough After Exposure To Fiberglass Dust
Question: I have had several accidental exposures at work to fiberglass dust. In both cases the dust was from a fiberglass/epoxy composite material being cut. The first time was several months ago when I neglected to have my mask on when cutting with a high speed router. Exposure was limited to several breaths and the tightness/irritation/mild coughing in my chest persisted for several weeks but resolved completely. The second exposure was about 1 month ago. The cutting in this case was with a small high speed XXXXXXX cut-off wheel being operated by someone else. Again exposure was limited to several breaths before I realized what was happening, but I really noticed the burning/irritation in my lungs immediately. Since then I have had tightness/irritation/mild to moderate dry cough in my upper chest that has not resolved. The exposure and subsequent symptoms are causing some emotional distress, which I have a history of "carrying" in my chest, so I believe that this may be a psycho-somatic kind of thing. However, I have lingering doubts about the possible long-term ramifications of exposure to fiberglass dust (silicosis). Because I lack the expertise to know whether my concerns are truly founded, I feel as if I may be in a cycle where my concern feeds distress which I "hold" in my chest which feeds further concern, etc. If you can provide any direction as to whether my concerns are medically founded and justify further examination it might help me to break out of this cycle, or at least provide a rational next step.
Brief Answer:
Get done PFT and HRCT thorax.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your question on Health Care Magic.
I can understand your concern.
In my opinion, you should not worry much for your symptoms.
Your symptoms are mostly due to stress and tension.
But better to get done HRCT thorax and PFT (Pulmonary Function Test).
HRCT thorax is needed to rule out parenchymal damage.
PFT is needed to rule out functional damage.
If both are normal than no need to worry for sillicosis or other lung disease.
So consult pulmonologist and discuss all these.
Avoid stress and tension, be relax and calm.
Don't worry, you will be alright.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health. Thanks.
