Question: My 17-year-old daughter's menstrual cycles are very irregular. She does not drink enough fluid on a regular basis and becomes dehydrated. I was wondering if there was a connection. Some days she may only drink about 16 to 20 oz of water.

Brief Answer:
May not be related.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us.

The irregularity of the menstrual cycles at this age is mostly due to hormone imbalance and usually gets corrected within a year or two as balance strikes in the body systems.

Sometimes, other causes like weight disturbances, stress, use of certain medications and infections are also responsible and so are hormone disorders like polycystic ovaries etc. A proper workup will help to identify the cause.

The intake of water is mostly unrelated to the menstrual irregularity unless there is a hormonal cause behind the decreased water intake.

Hope your query has been answered. Please feel free to contact for further clarifications. I will be happy to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.
