Question: I am a 28 yr old woman. My husband and I have been trying for a baby for more than a year. My periods are always irregular (gets delayed by 7-10 days).I have done a master health check up and all my vitals show normal(No thyroid, no anemia etc). Even my "Whole Abdomen Scan" shows no signs of cysts. My husband's semen analysis is normal as well. I started visiting my OBGYN from September 2013 and she has been giving me Clomiphene tablets and FSH,HMG injections for the past 8 months, still I have not conceived. I also ovulate successfully according to my doctor.
Last month, I started to visit a new OBGYN who has advised me for HSG and if tubes are blocked then Laproscopy must be done.
I do not want to go through HSG or Laproscopy, instead I'm opting for IVF treatment directly. Will IVF treatment be effective? Please advice.

Brief Answer:
IVF treatment is not 100 percent effective.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for posting your query.

Your doctor is right the logical investigation is Laproscopy to see patency of tubes. One should try for natural method first.

At times minor blockade of tubes can be opened by this procedure and problem is solved.

After that is there is no result then only you should opt for IVF.

Even in best centers of world, the success rate of IVF varies from only 20-35 percent maximum.

So IVF is not a sure shot treatment, again it is costly.

I think you should follow your doctors advise and go for laproscopy. Apart from condition of tubes it allows visualization of whole pelvis.

I hope this helps you in taking an informed decision.

Thank you for your reply.
Yesterday my OBGYN mentioned that she would be trying out the HSG test and then decide about Laproscopy. Is that better than directly going for lap ?? Also can you please let me know whether HSG test is very painful ?

Apart from that she mentioned that I may have polycystic ovaries, so prescribed Oosure plus tablets. Will the tablets cure PCOD/PCOS ?

Brief Answer:
Fine, either way of diagnosis can be taken.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Good to hear from you again.

First HSG is fine and you can go ahead with that.

HSG is not very painful,at times it can lead minor discomfort, but nothing really problematic.

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a problem in which a woman's hormones are out of balance. It can cause problems with periods and make it difficult to get pregnant. The woman's ovaries make multiple small follicles in the ovary.

Regular exercise, a healthy diet, weight control are all important parts of treatment for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Medicines will help to balance the hormones.

Dr.Pragnesh
