Suggest Treatment For Infected Hip Prosthesis

Posted on Sat, 12 Jul 2014
Question: Is there ANY recourse for a patient who has had 2 ortho surgeries by a Dr. he has NO confidence in? This Dr. failed TWICE to properly diagnose post op problems, and is now facing a 3rd surgery because of this surgeon's incompetence but no other surgeon will touch him! He has an infection in the hip prosthesis used (I'm an RN and knew about the recall), but this Dr. never acknowledged that, which is why I believe he requires yet another surgery.

Brief Answer:
Needs surgery.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
I can understand your concern.
If the hip prosthesis has become infected and the infection is not getting controlled with the help of antibiotics then surgical treatment is the only option left with your brother.
Since the same surgeon has operated on him twice already with failure in both the cases it is time to get a second opinion from another hip replacement surgeon.
A revision surgery will be best if done in another place.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.

He did get a second opinion - that is the Dr. who found the infection! But he said my brother would have to go back to the surgeon who did the surgery - he refused to touch my brother!

Brief Answer:
Get a referral.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
In that case you can ask his treating surgeon to refer your brother to another surgeon who can manage the case better. At least that way the second surgeon will not refuse the case. You can convey him regarding your brother's fears.
Hope my answer is helpful.
