Question: I have a friend who suffers with hypertension. He sleeps well during the night but easily feels the need to get on the bed a number of times during the day. The Dr is concerned his blood pressure is a bit too high at present. My friend is stressing what it could be and keeps questioning if there is anything else he could do to help himself. High blood pressure also runs in the family. How can I help him? What could the problem be?

Pain, anxiety, stress, under-treatment (needs adjustment of medications ...

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and an elucidate history.

Noted the history related to your friend.
Medications tried are: blood pressure tablets, antibiotic and pain killers.
May I please know the details why is he on antibiotic and pain killers?

Also noted that your friend is suffering from hypertension, sleeps well during night but feels the need to get on the bed in the day time, his Doctor is concerned about high blood pressure and himself thinks if he could do anything else to help himself. Blood pressure runs in his family and you want to know how you can help him and what could the problem be.

Since you have mentioned about the painkillers and antibiotic, I think of that he is suffering from some associated problem that you have not mentioned here.

The possible causes of elevated blood pressure in spite of being on medication are:
- Pain: is one of the reasons for elevated blood pressure. A good pain control helps to get a control over blood pressure.
- Stress and anxiety are one of the major causes and may need a medication under the guidance of the Doctor (need a prescription).
- The dosages of the medication for hypertension may need altered/increased as per the need.

- You can help in the following ways:
To alleviate the stress and anxiety, you can counsel him, give support.
Take him to the Cardiologist for clinical evaluation, examination and cardiac tests to decide the cause ad effects to get a correct diagnosis and get the correct line of treatment so that the blood pressure is kept within normal range.
To get to the Doctor to decide why is the antibiotic and painkillers be given, to find the cause and get diagnosed and treated properly.

I hope this answer helps you to help him properly, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
