Suggest Treatment For Hematoma After Undergoing Pacemaker Surgery

default
Posted on Fri, 21 Oct 2016
Question: I had pacemaker surgery 16 days ago and a hematoma appeared soon afterward on top of the device just below the skin; there is no infection (blood cultures taken). it is draining a little darker than normal "blood". Should I go to ER or Urgent Care or wait till I see the cardio people on my Monday appointment? There is no discomfort; actually what remained might be decreasing. I am using sterile gauze with gloves in the area, but no pressure. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
No need for an ER visit. Stick to the regular appointment on Monday!!

Detailed Answer:
HI and thanks for this query.

I have reviewed your information fully and this is certainly in line with a hematoma being evacuated. This is the best way so that there is no stagnant pool of blood that can increase the risk of an infection. I have also reviewed the various details: No signs of an infection, no pain, no offensive odor, and these raise no red flags and to me do not justify any emergency trip to the ER. Be calm and wait patiently for the Monday visit in all assurance that you are not running any unnecessary risk by doing so.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me for more information and clarifications if need be. Also, let me know the outcome of your visit on Monday.
