Question: My son has complained for as long as I can remember of heart palpitations. He would then get very afraid. He has went to the emergency room several times, and they have found nothing wrong, other than a rapid heartbeat. They tell him he has anxiety, but he feels like there's more to it than that. He says he feels sometimes like he has a digestive problem; like pressure in his upper abdomen. Sometimes he will wake up and his heart is pounding. I have felt it before, and it really is beating very hard and fast, as if someone just walked up behind him and said," Boo!!". On one occasion, he called an ambulance because of the palpitations, and they basically said they thought he was under the influence of some sort of drug, which he definitely is not, and that's why the rapid heartbeat. Since drugs are not the cause, what conditions might he have that could cause these symptoms, if any?

stress, anxiety or consumption of stimulants (caffeine, nicotine)can cause it

Detailed Answer:
Welcome

I understood your concern.

Heart palpitations can be bothersome or frightening. They usually aren't serious or harmful, though, and often go away on their own.
Most of the time, they're related to stress and anxiety or to consumption of stimulants such as caffeine, nicotine, or alcohol. Anxiety is a feeling of apprehension, fear, or worry.

In rare cases, palpitations can be a sign of a more serious heart condition. immediate medical attention is required if along with palpitations, there is experience shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pain, or fainting.

Lifestyle changes, including stress management and the avoidance of common triggers, can help prevent them.
