Question: My daughter is 13yrs old. She has been feeling "off" for a few days with a cough .. However tonight she seems to be breathing faster, heart rate is 114-118BPM , fever of 101, and chokes and has a very hard time recovering from a coughing fit. I am really concerned with her heart rate being so high, should I be, or is this fairly normal? am also pretty concerned with the breathing issues she seems to be breathing fast and trying to get in more air. I should mention that she has goldenhar syndrome, so her jaw and surrounding areas are a bit smaller than normal.

Brief Answer:
take her to er

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.

Definitely that is tachycardia or fast heart rate.
Increase in breathing efforts could be because of upper airway obstruction or stridor.

It is better to take her to Emergency Room. Her air blood gases and saturation has to be checked and she may need oxygen or nebulisations.

Because she has jaw issues I suggest you should seek medical attention ASAP

Dont worry.
She will get better soon.

you don't think its okay to take her in the morning? you think it is an ER situation?it's 2 am here and she is sleeping. I checked her pulse and she is hanging just around 100BPM sleeping, and her fever seems to be responding to the tylenol well. I am really worried now. I was hoping that the heart rate was just the fever at work

yes you can wait

Detailed Answer:
Hi
No need to worry.
If pulse rate is down to 100 and she is sleeping and fever responding to Tylenol wait until morning.
But if breating difficulty worsens.you may need to take her soon.

I took her to the ER, After 4 hours and a chest X-ray, they gave her a breathing treatment, which raised her heart rate to over 150bpm then decided that she was fine.
I am concerned about her .
Right now at the ER still, oxygen level is 94 and heart rate hovering on 125. They keep telling me this is " normal"

Brief Answer:
should be fine

Detailed Answer:
I think they would have given her nebulisations. Dont worry she should settle soon.
That temporary rise in heart rate is possible due to nebulisation .
Do follow your doctor s advice.
Wishing speedy recovery.
