Well if you have acute painful joint , then you should start with naproxen 500 mg twice daily . This is antiinflammatory drug that will help to reduce pain and swelling provided there is no contraindication for the same . Your treating doctor will probably start you on colchicine and might add a small dose of steroid as instant relief but that can be started after assessing the situation physically . So you can discuss that with your treating doctor . Also you can do icing of the joint to relieve pain .
