Posted on Thu, 13 Nov 2014
Question: I have severe soreness in my breasts, and what feel like cysts. I've been on orthotricyclen for 5.5 weeks now, and bled last on October 2nd for several days. My bleeding was a little bit early. This summer I had cystic breasts as well for a couple weeks, but no pregnancy. Could I possibly be pregnant although I've been on the pill?

Brief Answer:
Fibrocystic breast disease. Follow advices.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:

According to information and clinical presentation, it is MOSTLY suggestive of Fibrocystic Breast Disease, affecting 50% women in child bearing age group. Your chance of pregnancy is EXTREMELY LOW or NIL following period on 2nd Oct.

It is NON-CANCEROUS breast lump and causes mild to moderate pain, discomfort (sometimes) and related with hormonal influences (mainly ESTROGEN) from the menstrual cycle. The pain and swelling is usually worse in the second half of the cycle. In that case, women need proper treatment.

Here, I suggest you to undergo proper breast examination, mammography or ultrasound scan and FNAC/ biopsy (if needed) for complete evaluation. Kindly, consult with gynecologist or physician for proper guidance.

PRIMOSA capsule or DANAZOL can be given for short period to reduce breast tenderness. Progesterone ointments and supplements (NOT combined pill) are also useful. Kindly, consult with your doctor for complete prescription.

In addition, you would take salt restricted (up to 50%) balanced diet, cut down dietary fat (up to 40%) and CAFFEINE in the 2nd half of cycle. Do regular light exercise to reduce or control body weight, try to avoid mental stress and wear comfortable breast support.

Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish your good health and take care yourself.

I took a pregnancy test yesterday morning and it said negative- are you sure that I could not be pregnant? I've read that birth control pills are supposed to decrease your likelihood of having fibrocystic breasts.

When should I take a pregnancy test to ensure that it is accurate?

why did this randomly start happening in my breasts?

Brief Answer:
No chance of pregnancy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for follow up query.

1) You have NO chance of pregnancy because you got your period on 2nd Oct and you are currently on birth control pill (gives highest protection around 99%).

2) Pregnancy test in the mid cycle is INVALID. For accurate result, you have to undergo home pregnancy test 7 days after missed period.

3) Yea, birth control pill usually decreases fibrocystic disease to some extent in most cases. However, high level of estrogen can increase breast swelling and tenderness in the 2nd half of cycle. It may be mastalgia. You should follow previous advices to get effective result.

Hope, I have answered your query. Kindly, close the discussion.

All the best and good luck.

Regards,
Dr S Patra
