Posted on Mon, 27 Apr 2015
Question: My mother is suffering from eosinophilea, from last 6-7 years doctor told her it may be due to some allergic reaction. She has been prescribed cetgel tab. But from last night her cold has gone severe and the medicine isn't working. Is it due to the air conditioning effect as she has been sleeping in the air conditioner for a while.Kindly help me out soon.

Brief Answer:
This is not allergic but infective now!

Detailed Answer:
Hi! thanks for your query regarding your mother's health!

In my opinion if your mother has been suffering from some undetected allergic reaction and she is on cetirizine tablets, then she is on correct treatment. Now the condition has worsened possibly due to:

1. lower respiratory tract infection which could be viral or bacterial

2. aggravation/acute symptoms of pulmonary fungal infection

3. mixed infection in the already damaged lung could be some emphysematous changes, coughs and pneumothorax

It could be clinically severe, but it is potentially treatable and you need not worry much but must see a chest physician as she needs chest x-ray, sputum test and some blood works to determine the exact antibiotics, inhalers/other medicines if needed..

And yes, air conditioners sometimes may cause viral/pneumophila infections.

Wishing your mother early recovery,
