Question: I have had 4 bouts of diverticulitis since November, last attack was month ago but never felt right since. Went from constipation to dihrrea to bloating and now softer more narrow stools. I'm having pain in lower abdomen, right side and lower back which started earlier today and comes and goes with some tenderness in lower stomach, I started taking align probiotics less than week ago and started having headaches. Not sure if I should go to er for ct scan.

Brief Answer:
DIVERTICULITIS

Detailed Answer:
DEAR GOODHEARTGR,
THANKS FOR YOUR QUERY.
DIVERTICULITIS IS A PROBLEM WHICH WILL OCCUR REPEATEDLY. IN ADDITION TO PROBITICS YOU NEED A COURSE OF ANTIBIOTICS AS WELL. THE ANTIBIOTICS SHOULD BE ON THE BASIS OF STOOL CULTURE AND SENSITIVITY TEST. OR YOU CAN TAKE EMPIRICALLY INTESTINAL ANTIBIOTICS IN CONSULTATION WITH YOUR TRATING SURGEON.
AS REGARDS C T SCAN OF ABDOMEN THERE IS NO HARM GETTIMG IT DONE. DIVERTICULITIS IS A INCIDENTAL CAUSE FOR CANCER FORMATION.HENCE TO RULE OUT CANCER FORMATION CT MAY BE HELPFUL.

Thank you for getting back with me. I noticed after urinating it relieved pain few minutes ago, the tenderness is gone and doesn't hurt to push on my stomach just a bit of pain on lower right about pelvic area. This almost makes me think of Kidney or uti infection but not really having those symptoms. Had complete hysterectomy yrs ago.Is it normal for these symptoms to go away and come back little later? I have also had 4 ct scans with contrast done in last 5 months every time went to er with attack with the last scan being a month ago

Brief Answer:
Diverticulitis

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for reverting;

You have narrated your details in parts. It is good that you had multiple abdominal ct scans and they were found normal ruling out suspicious and dreadful problem.

Since you have hysterectomy also done, urinary tract infection is a common finding. As suggested earlier urine culture sensitivity should be helpful. Ct scan can be avoided but ureteric calculus should be ruled out by plain kub of abdomen. A calculus is also responsible for recurrent uti. But firstly please get your urine tested for routine and microscopic examination to rule out basic problem
