Question: Hello doctor ,
My son is 16 months old . 10days before he got diarrhoea . So the doctor gave him :
Nanocin syrup 5ml
Entrogermina 1pack
And last week he got running nose and nasal block . So the doctor gave him :
Tminic syrup 3 ml
Before all this , his weight was 9.7
During this illness it became 9.4 and his appetite is ruined .
Today from morning he feels a bit uncomfortable . He had a loose stool once today. He vomited a little in the evening an felt very irritated . So i put him to bed early . Within half an hour he woke and started crying badly . I gave him Colicaid drops . He was ok but still was uncomfortable . Is it anything serious ? Do i have to take tests ?

Brief Answer:
Such conditions are very common in children

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through the details carefully. Your child initially suffered from an episode of diarrhoea for which Zanocin (Ofloxacin - an antibiotic) was prescribed along with Enterogermina which contains beneficial bacteria. Thereafter the child developed cough and cold which is generally caused by certain viruses and the doctor rightly prescribed T-minic (antiallergic + expectorant).

After an episode of diarrhoea, the child might have lost some weight but if you can adequately maintain the hydration, the weight will soon be fine. If the child passes loose stools, be sure to give ORS (oral rehydration solution) in small amounts. Prepare ORS by mixing a full XXXXXXX in the designated amount of water (200 ml or 1 litre depending upon the size of sachet). Occasionally abdominal colic may occur for which giving Colicaid would be the right thing to be done.

In addition to the above steps, I would suggest you to avoid milk from his diet for a week or so although you may give curd in plenty. I would also suggest giving zinc supplements like Zinconia syrup 5 ml once a day for 7 days. That will help in repair of the intestinal epithelium that gets damaged during episodes of diarrhoea.

Such ailments are common in children and non-serious in nature provided you take the simple steps like giving ORS in the right time. Children do not feed well when they are not well. Supportive care of the child should soon return the appetite to normal.

Tests are unlikely to reveal anything so I would not insist for any specific tests at the moment. But I would suggest you to keep your treating pediatrician updated with the developments so that he can ask for a follow up as and when required.

Please do not worry. I hope that your child will soon be fine.

Brief Answer:
ORS would be the mainstay of treatment in such a case

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

ORS is a WHO (World Health Organization) based formula and it is the same for any company that manufactures it. So you may take any of them. ORS is to be given in small amounts to keep him adequately hydrated. ORS would be the mainstay of treatment in such a case. Concentrated urine means that he needs plenty of fuids and ORS to drink. If not hydrated properly, he may go into dehydration which is a serious conditon and may require hospitalisation for intravenous fluids. A normal frequency of passage of urine will indicate that hydration is adequate.

Nutrolin B is vitamin B supplement. You can give it for a week or so but it is unlikely to be of much help. His mother can surely continue feeding him. Breast milk need not be dropped. No need to give glucose. ORS contains glucose along with the requisite salts.

Hope that helps. Hoping for your son to be well soon.

Brief Answer:
Electral is a popular brand of ORS

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking back again.

You can go to any medicine shop and ask for ORS and you will get it. Electral is a very popular brand of ORS which you may opt for. Other brands are Bio-Lyte, P-Lyte etc.

The symptoms of dehydration are lethargy and not passing urine for more than 6 hours. If you see such things happening, you will have to rush the child to a hospital and before such signs develop you will have to give plenty of ORS and other fluids so that dehydration never develops.

Hope that helps.

Answered by Dr. Diptanshu Das (1 minute later)
Brief Answer:
Curd can safely be given during cough and cold

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

There is no problem if you give curd during an episode of cough and cold. Just do not bring it out of the refrigerator before you give it to him. Let it reach around room temperature before you give it.

Brief Answer:
Clinical correlation needed

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

It is likely that 'dilated bowel loops' on ultrasound. It does not point to a particular disorder or condition. The causes could vary between nothing serious to small intestinal obstruction and hence need to be correlated clinically. Please talk to your treating pediatrician and he would be able to explain better. Most probably it is not a cause to worry about.

Hoping for a quick recovery for your son.

Answered by Dr. Diptanshu Das (45 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Give some antispasmodics after talking to your doctor

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Your son could be developing signs of intestinal obstruction. Or it could be something less serious. To be able to tell better, I would need to examine the child as well as look directly at the x ray and ultrasound plates which is beyond the scope of this discussion. That is the reason I insisted on your talking to your doctor who could correlate clinically.

Intestinal obstruction is a serious condition which could require surgical intervention but if that is not the case, I would be unnecessarily frightening you. Sorry for not being able to be more precise.
