Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea In An Infant After Feeding Cerelac

default
Posted on Sat, 20 Aug 2016
Question: My daughter is 2months and 10 days old. I had started with diluted rice cerelac for her 4 days back and she seemed to digest well however since last night she has been having greenish loosemotions about 6 to 8 times a day. What should i give her. Will be stopping cerelac and breastfeed her exclusively from tomorrow to see if there is any change or not. Also want to know if i can start any medicines.
Thanks.
Waiting for a response.

Brief Answer:
Please do not start weaning food before 5 months (ideally 6 months)

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Let me assure you that it is normal for a child of this age to pass stool ten times a day or even after each feed (it is also normal for her to pass stool once in 10 days). If the stool frequency increases, the transit time reduces and the bile pigments do not get enough time to get converted to the yellow pigment that colors the stool. That is the reason for the greenish stools. I would not get concerned about it.

However, I would insist you to discontinue the rice cerelac since her gastrointestinal tract is not mature enough. Although there seem to be no apparent problems with digestion, there is much that is remaining undigested. This undigested stuff is getting degraded by intestinal bacteria to produce substances that absorb more water and thus lead to osmotic diarrhea identical to the one you have mentioned. Stopping that would be fine.

I would not insist on giving antibiotics. However, give zinc supplements like Zinconia Syrup 2 ml once daily for next 10 days. Continue to exclusively breast feed the child as that is very important.

Let me know if you have any further queries.

Regards

Evn today her motions went upto 8 to 10 times patticulatly after every feed. Although the amount passed is not too much. I have been breastfeeding her whole day and still this.. i have started with wellamycin.. so far jus one dose and giving ger bonnisson but no significant improvement n this has been stressing me out. Pls help. There is something definitely wrong here as she is uneasy even while passing gas. Otherwise shr is a happy baby who passes yellow motion and lots of it just once or twice a day

Brief Answer:
It is normal for a child of this age to pass stool several times a day.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Sorry for not being able to respond faster.

Let me assure you that you need not be bothered about the frequency of stool. I have already mentioned that it is normal for a child of this age to pass stool several times a day. I do not think that it has been a good idea to start Wallamycin but since you have started the course, please complete the course.

Make sure to burp the child properly. The child needs to be held upright for at least 15-20 mins after each feed so that the excess air ingested while taking food, escapes and the abdominal distention that was causing discomfort, is reduced.

Let me know if I could be of further assistance.

Doctor. Like i told you somethig is definitely wrong. Today she has been passing motion every five minutes or so.. even little watery greenish potty. As soon as o clean her n make her wear a new nappy she passes again
Iv started giving her enterogermina twice a day and econorm shachet half twice a day.
I also gave her a little starch water to drink about two ounces but there is no improvement at all. Infact only worse

Brief Answer:
Viral diarrhea or antibiotic associated diarrhea.

Detailed Answer:
I understand your apprehension. It is possible that the child has got a viral infection as rotaviral diarrhea is frequently the cause of diarrhea in children. Alternatively, it is also possible that giving Wellamycin has eliminated the normal intestinal bacterial flora giving rise to antibiotic associated diarrhea. In any case all you need to do is to keep replenishing the lost water and salts. Breast milk is the best option. If you feel that its not enough, ORS (oral rehydration solution) can be given. If the child passes urine more than 6 times in 24 hours, there is probably nothing to be concerned about.
