Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea Along With Fever, Chills And Body Pain

default
Posted on Wed, 13 Sep 2017
Question: I have had diarrhea for five days. ( been in madagascar). It started with feeling feverish, chills and achiness. The following day diarrhea set in. Had my temp checked twice through the five days and no fever. Tried charcoal tablets. Tried immodium. Only gave temporary relief. I am currently in Paris and return home in one and a half days. Is it dangerous to have it this long? Is there something you can recommend to give me some relief? The diarrhea today had been liquid.

Brief Answer:
Infectious Gastroenteritis.Try to avoid long journey and keep yourself hydrated. If you can't avoid journey then take all three medicines as adviced by me below.Drink plenty of natural juices and ors to keep your body hydrated.Avoid solid food during your journey.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query.
Have gone through your details and i appreciate your concerns.
Your symptoms refer mostly to an acute gastroenteritis (infection of bowels). - For the time being,
Fever and chills are suggestive of active infection in body.
Aches are due to loss of electrolytes in loose stools.
Use special rehydration drinks made from sachets electral or ors solution to maintain depleted electrolyte levels in serum.Once levels of electrolyte are repleted aches would settle down.

Try to avoid journey till loose motions are in control. However in case you can't then take-
Imodium 4 mg four times a day.
Ofloxacin 200 mg twice a day(9a.m-9 p.m)
Metronidazole 400 mg twice daily(9a.m-9p.m)
You would feel much better after one dose.
You may need a prescription.
If you feel like eating, try small amounts of plain foods, such as soup, rice, pasta and bread.
Once you are back to your place you should go for some more investigations to identify the real culprit. I'd suggest, then, to do an abdominal ultrasound, fecal examination for ova/parasites, feces occult blood, leucocytes in feces, and complete blood profile.

Hope it answered to your question!

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for follow up.
Yes you can take a short term course of ofloxacin and metronidalzole for 3 days.
However number days depend on percentage of relief.
As you have already taken 2 doses kindly tell me percent of relief in symptoms on a scale of 10.

Yes if you want you can visit urgent care. Its always a better option to get examined physically.

Warm regards.

I would put myself at a 4. I am still afraid to leave the hotel room. I have been drinking juices and drinking ORS. I have been urinating more. And my diarrhea has lessened. So far today i have eaten a Larabar (dates, nuts) and some crackers.
