Suggest Treatment For Deteriorating Conditions While Treating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Mar 2015
Question: My mom (60) has been suffering from neuropathy - Carpal tunnel syndrome - for the past few years. She has been treated with diprofos injection, initially every two years, however, recently more often. Her last treatment was in October 2014 and her condition is deteriorating again. She was told that the effect of the injection was going to be shorter during time.
Is there any other treatment that you would recommend and what are the possible consequences of these injections been taken frequently?
Please advise.

Brief Answer:
She can be treated with minor surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
If this injection is not improving her condition than she can be benefited with a minor surgical procedure. This will take less than half an hour. Surgeon will remove pressure on the nerve and there will be hardly three or four stitches.
After this surgery she can start working after two weeks.
Diprofos injection contains steroid and it can make her nerve weak. It should not be repeated after two injections.
Till she get this surgery done she can take Tablet Pregabalin and Methylcobal daily at night time for pain relief. She need to discuss with her doctor for that. Some wrist splints are also available.
I hope this answer will help you. Let me know if there is any followup questions.
thanks

Dear Dr XXXXXXX

Thank you for the answer provided.

Just a clarification, please - does 'It should not be repeated after two injections' mean that after two-injection treatments, regardless of the time span in between, further treatments of this kind are not recommended?

Brief Answer:
more than steroid injection can harm your knee

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
More than two injection irrespective of time frame should not be given as it can cause tendon damage or nerve damage. Any way If it is not getting cure after two injection it means that it is not nerve inflammation but tight flexor retinaculam ( band over nerve) and it needs to be removed to get nerve pressure free.
Thanks.

Dear Dr XXXXXXX

Thank you for the reply.

I have one more question regarding the issue - once the surgery is performed, is it possible and is it common for the condition to reoccur?

Thank you in advance,
