Suggest Treatment For Cough And Fever

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Nov 2015
Question: My daughter has had allergies all month. For the last week she has had a bad cough. We do breathing treatments twice a day but they don't seem to be helping. Just tonight she broke out in a fever 101. And sounds a little congested and has been drooling in her sleep. Should I take her to ER or wait till morning? Her fever has gone down.

Brief Answer:
Steam inhalation would provide relief. You may wait till tomorrow.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

Cough and cold are frequently caused due to viral infections. Often it is associated with fever. Antibiotics are ineffective in viral infections and irrespective of the use of antibiotics, it usually takes 5-7 days to recover.
You can give some antiallergic like Claritin(loratadine) once daily for a few days during such episodes. It helps in reducing the allergic component that is generally associated. Give her Tylenol as required whenever she has fever.
You may wait till tomorrow. You need not take her to ER.

Some children are more prone to catching such infections. The propensity however comes down with age. Apart from maintaining proper hygiene and a nutritious diet nothing else needs to be done. Nebulization or steam inhalation is however greatly beneficial. Water in the form of vapour enters deep inside the lungs and helps in diluting the cough and thereby provides relief. This is the main stay of treatment and should be given a few times a day.

Let me know if I could be of further help.

Regards
