Suggest Treatment For Consumption Of Spoiled Watermelon During Pregnancy

Question: Hi there, I am pregnant with twins, 11 weeks and just ate a bite of spoiled, slimy watermelon. It was a slice from a new whole watermelon but it must have been off already. Am I at risk of listeria or other problems and how do I mitigate risks to the babies?

Brief Answer:
Intact watermelon cut a while ago has no risk

Detailed Answer:
Hello mam, thanks for trusting health care magic.
I would like to ask you if it was a cut watermelon or an intact but old one cut now and then realized that it was rotten?
If it was an intact watermelon then no risk of listeria at all.
And in case it was a cut watermelon but preserved at low temperatures in fridge then for at least 24 hours then also there is no risk.
Waiting for your response.

Hi there - it was a whole watermelon (mine was the first slice, but it was clearly off). Not any noticeable splits but it is in the bin so hard to say. E how.com says I am at risk of serious food borne illness from rotten watermelon so I feel worried. What serious illness are they referring to? And what measures can I take to protect the babies?
With thanks,
doctor

Brief Answer:
Simple Precautions advised

Detailed Answer:
In my opinion you should take vitamin C tablet and curd three times a day for 3 days and avoid any uncooked food item or any antacid substance at all.
Also take good amount of rest and limit your water intake.
Consume dry food items instead of gravy and avoid spicy stuff.
In case you don't have any retching or heartburn then nothing to worry.

Hi there - I still have three main questions.
What is curd and how will it help?
I already have constant retching, heartburn and nausea as part of my morning sickness so how will I know if I have been affected by the watermelon and then what do I do if I have been?
What serous food borne illnesses am I at risk of, ie those referred to on e-how.com?

Brief Answer:
Usually diarrhea is there along with nausea

Detailed Answer:
By curd I meant yogurt and any prebiotic-probiotic composition like yakult easily available in supermarket
These products are rich in good bacteria and thus helps in improved fighting capacity of body.
Vomiting in pregnancy is usually associated with a lot of nausea and retching as you are already having but in if at all watermelon had affected your system there are direct numerous vomiting episodes and the volume of vomitus is basically solid food items.
Also in food poisoning vomiting is associated with a lot of abdominal pain and diarrhea or at least loose stools.
Serious food borne illnesses include typhoid and listeria and at times cholera and hepatitis A & E.
But these illnesses will give you a lot of other symptoms like fever, pain abdomen and diarrhea.
So in case you are not having any such symptoms then nothing to worry.

Yes, but for example with listeria pregnant women do not have many symptoms / may not notice but serious infection for the babies.
What I need to know is:
Specifically are all those illnesses relevant to gone off watermelon?
Are there blood tests to check for any of these illnesses and if so from when are they relevant (e.g.listeria incubates for a month or so).
Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Simple tests advised

Detailed Answer:
In my opinion there is no need to get any test if you have no new symptoms but in case you are feeling very anxious then get complete blood counts, urine complete widal and weil XXXXXXX test from a good laboratory.
These tests if normal then just keep your water intake on higher side now and get an ultrasound in 2 weeks to see for growth of babies and nuchal thickness.
Hopefully all will come fine and thus we will be relieved.
Take care
